U.S. Sen. Mark Begich today released the following statement after Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced, in a taped speech to the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention, that the federal government will conduct a sweeping review of subsistence management in Alaska.
"I applaud the Obama Administration for recognizing the importance of subsistence in Alaska. This is a critical issue for our state, and a wholesale review of federal subsistence management is definitely needed.
"This review is not only important to the subsistence way of life, but to the preservation of Alaska Native cultural values.
"I encouraged this review and would urge Alaskans to get involved in the discussion. Working together with this administration can ensure that current and future generations of Alaska Native people will reap the benefits of our great land."
