Blunt To Vote Against Defense Authorization Bill Because Includes Unconstitutional "hate Crimes" Policy

Location: Washington, D.C.

Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt today announced he will vote against the National Defense Authorization Bill for fiscal year 2010 because it contains controversial and unconstitutional "hate crimes" policy completely unrelated to the defense of the country.

"Creating a new classification of prosecutions based on thought compromises the very freedoms our service men and women fight to protect," Blunt said. "It's absolutely indefensible that the Defense Authorization Bill, which should fund our troops, is instead being used as a vehicle for controversial social policy."

On the House floor, Blunt said, "Criminals should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; victims should be protected to the fullest extent of the law. It should not happen in the Defense Authorization Bill."

"To use this bill in this way is a step in the wrong direction," continued Blunt, who has voted for every Defense Authorization bill since he has been in Congress. "I'm afraid it's just the first step in that wrong direction where every bill to defend the country, every bill to find out what our enemies are up to, every bill to fund our troops, every bill to take care of their families will become a vehicle for other social legislation that has nothing to do with defense."
