Senator McConnell Helps Dedicate Statue of Helen Keller

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell joined other members of the Congressional leadership Wednesday in officially unveiling the bronze statue of Helen Keller in the Capitol Rotunda.

"By dedicating this statue in this place of giants, we show that those whom the world calls imperfect are not only worth our attention, they're worth our highest honors, that alongside the war heroes, the statesmen, and the trailblazers, we reserve a special place for men and women whose feats are even greater because of the obstacles they have overcome. That's a very American thing to do, to borrow a phrase. And it's also the right thing to do in an age when some are still dismissed or cast aside for nothing more than being less-than-perfect. The story of Helen Keller inspires all of us," McConnell said.

The bronze statue depicts Keller at the moment when she first made her language breakthrough, as a seven-year-old girl pumping water at her family home in 1887. It was at this moment that her teacher, Anne Sullivan, spelled out the word "water" as Ms. Keller felt it wash over her other hand.

McConnell added, "with the help of a loving family, a tireless teacher, and a fierce determination few of us can ever know, Helen Keller overcame great odds. She became one of the most admired women of the 20th century. And she showed the world that when we do the best we can, miracles happen."
