Today, Congressman Leonard Boswell applauded the final provisions on processed Chinese poultry products outlined in the 2010 Agriculture-FDA Appropriations bill for requiring the imports to meet American public health standards, while still taking a step forward in agriculture trade relations with China.
"The public health provisions on Chinese cooked poultry products that were adopted during Conference will require China to meet America's safety standards, but not inhibit a trade relationship between the two countries," said Boswell, who signed a letter to Conference Committee in support of this final language. "As a senior Member of the House Agriculture Committee, I will continue to work toward a better trade relationship with China that benefits Iowa's farmers and livestock producers."
Under the final conference language, the USDA would conduct more on-site audits and on-site inspections of Chinese poultry factories, and monitor conditions in China on a more frequent basis.
