Congressman Steve Scalise today made the following statement regarding President Obama and the leaders of Britain and France demanding that Iran's secret nuclear fuel facility be opened to international inspectors.
"We must stop Iran from obtaining the capability to produce nuclear weapons. Iran's nuclear proliferation continues to be a threat to the United States, Israel, and the entire world. I am glad that President Obama recognizes Iran's nuclear threat, but we need to cut Iran off in the pocket-book by implementing real economic and trade sanctions.
"President Obama also needs to reconsider his decision to scrap the U.S. missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. We need to renew our country's commitment to develop and deploy long-range missile defense system in Eastern Europe."
Scalise is a co-sponsor of several bills in Congress that would increase petroleum and financial sanctions against Iran and enhance international diplomatic efforts to end Iran's uranium enrichment program and its nuclear weapons program. Among the bills Scalise is a co-sponsor are the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act (HR 2194), the Iran Threat Reduction Act (HR 1208), and the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act (HR 1327).
