Holding ACORN Accountable

Statement

Date: Sept. 15, 2009

Dear Friend,

Late last week, undercover videos surfaced allegedly showing members of the community-activist group ACORN advocating tax fraud and giving tax advice for illegal services. These disturbing videos shed light on some ACORN members and should be investigated. Following these videos, I sent this letter to the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), demanding a hearing.

In January, I was named to the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy, our national debt, trade and many of our national entitlement programs. On the Committee, I serve as the lead Republican on the Oversight Subcommittee. Our Subcommittee is responsible for keeping a check and balance on the IRS as well as tax assistance groups.

While the individuals involved in the videos have been fired by ACORN, Congress should investigate ACORN, which receives millions in taxpayer dollars each year, and their tax assistance services to ensure these practices were isolated incidents. As the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee, I will continue to press this issue until groups like ACORN are held accountable.

Sincerely,
