Camp Statement On Today's Student Loan Programs Vote

U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, (R-MI) today opposed having the federal government take over private loan programs that would eliminate lending options for college students and their families.

In voting against the so-called Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, Camp called the bill, “A wolf in sheep's clothing.”

“It sounds nice and harmless, but the reality is this bill would drive up the deficit, drive private lenders out of business and leave students with fewer choices,” Camp said. “In these tough economic times, the last thing we should be doing is limiting students' ability to borrow and pay for their college education, all while further hurting our economy and driving up the national debt.”

Camp's other concerns with the bill's include:

* An estimated $15.1 billion price tag over the next ten years that will likely skyrocket in real market conditions.
* The creation of ten new mandatory federal programs.
