Statement from Senator Pryor On the Child Safe Viewing Act Report

Senator Mark Pryor today applauded the FCC's review of parental control technologies and its continued commitment to gather new information related to children and the media. He authored the Child Safe Viewing Act, which was signed into law in November 2007, to require the FCC to provide a review of filtering technology in the marketplace or in development. Pryor made the following remarks regarding the FCC's report:

It is an uphill battle for parents trying to protect their kids from viewing inappropriate programming. Fortunately, the FCC's report confirms a new generation of technology exists that can provide additional layers of support for these families. The more knowledge parents have about the tools available to them, the more control they have over what their children view or hear.

While the report contains a beneficial catalogue of the most up-to-date tools available, it also reveals basic roadblocks and major limitations. I appreciate FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski's commitment to address these challenges, especially his decision to take immediate and concrete steps responding to the concerns exposed under this review. I plan to continue working with the FCC, Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller and other members of the Commerce Committee to find solutions to help parents and children in the digital age.
