Brenham Banner Press: Mccaul Doesn't Want Health Reform Bill Passed In Its Current State

U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul said that he will give everything he has to make sure a health reform bill doesn't pass in its current state.

It is not the right plan for America, McCaul said at Tuesday's Republican Club meeting in the Blinn College Student Center.

Several hundred people attended the meeting, which dealt mostly with health care reforms.

Although, Democrats have a majority in the House and Senate, McCaul said that there is unanimous Republican objection to the bill and if they reach out to 20 "blue dog" Democrats, the bill can be blocked.

This bill will have a huge impact on physicians and small businesses," McCaul said. "It will create a physician shortage and tax small businesses if they don't offer health insurance to their employees."

The tax will come at a bad time and cause many to go out of business because they can't afford the overhead cost or make a profit, McCaul said. This isn't the way to insure more people, he added.

McCaul is supporting a plan that will give employers tax incentives to insure employees, make insurance companies pool people across state lines and help individuals pay for insurance premiums by offering a tax break.

"The current plan is dead-on-arrival," McCaul said. "The Democrats even voted down an amendment that would force them to be on the same plan as their constituents."

McCaul also spoke about national security and the $12 trillion national debt.

"Small businesses are going to pay for all of this — cap-and-trade, the health care reform and the national debt," McCaul said. "This will not get America out of the recession."

He also said that town hall meetings across the country have drawn people who genuinely care about where the country is going and don't want to walk down that road.

"The people are angry and finally standing up for our rights. They are telling the government to stay out of our lives," McCaul said.
