Mack: Democrats Wrong to Obstruct Funding for Merida Initiative
Urges President Obama to defend the U.S. Constitution and support people of Mexico in effort to curb drug trafficking and crime at weekend summit
Congressman Connie Mack, the Ranking Republican of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, today urged President Obama to discourage members of his party from blocking funding for the important Merida Initiative, which has helped to combat drug trafficking and crime since 2007.
Senator Patrick Leahy the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State Department and Foreign Operations, is delaying the release of more than $100 million in funding for the Merida Initiative by blocking the release of a key State Department report affirming that Mexico is respecting human rights.
"At this weekend's North American Leaders Summit, President Obama should denounce the obstructionists in his party and call on Democrats and Senator Leahy to support the people of Mexico and guarantee that the needed Merida funding is released.
"The increase in drug trafficking across the border has serious implications for the security of the United States and the entire hemisphere. The Merida Initiative is a vital tool in combating drugs and crime, and requires the full cooperation of both the United States and Mexico for it to be successful.
"Additionally, some on the Left are all too willing to blame America first and undermine our Second Amendment rights. But as the facts clearly show, instead of pandering to their base and taking away our right to bear arms, Democrats should get down to business, approve this report, and get the resources to the Mexican government in order to resoundingly defeat the cartels.
"The people of Mexico should be applauded for their courage and daring tenacity against what has been unimaginable violence. For every minute that passes while this critical money is held, Mexicans across the country face shocking bloodshed and violence.
"Now is not the time to pull the rug out from under the Mexicans in their fight to defeat the cartels. President Obama must call on the Democrats in Congress to put an end to the political games and release the remaining Merida funding once and for all."
