Congressman Paul Hodes Supports Relief For New Hampshire Dairy Farmers

Days after joining the Congressional Dairy Caucus, Congressman Paul Hodes today applauded the Obama Administration's announcement that it would increase the amount paid for dairy products through the Dairy Product Price Support System (DPPSP). Yesterday, Congressman Hodes wrote to the Administration, urging them to increase the payments for DPPSP. Over the next three months, these increases are estimated to result in an additional $243 million in increased revenues for America's dairy farmers.

"Dairy farmers are an important part of the Granite State economy, and they deserve our support during these difficult times," said Congressman Hodes. "This increase will result in immediate relief for New Hampshire's dairy farmers. I remain committed to working towards a long-term solution to help New Hampshire's dairy farmers."

New Hampshire's approximately 130 dairy farms produce 40 million gallons of milk every year, which results in around $53 million in annual revenue for the state of New Hampshire. Currently, the costs of production are much greater than revenues, with farmers losing about $100 per cow, per month.

The announced increase will be in effect from August through October of this year. The price paid for nonfat dry milk will rise from $0.80 per pound to $0.92 per pound, while the price paid for cheddar blocks will increase from $1.13 per pound to $1.31 per pound. Additionally, the price of cheddar barrels will increase from $1.10 per pound to $1.28 per pound.
