Congressman Peter J. Roskam today issued the following statement after the House passed H.R. 6630, legislation blocking the Bush Administration from allowing Mexico-domiciled trucks to operate in the U.S.:
"This legislation is vital to protect our roads and ensure we do not lose more jobs to Mexico. Unfortunately, the Bush Administration has been intent on pushing this program to allow Mexican trucks to have free access to our nation's roads.
"I disagree with President Bush. I have consistently called for, and Congress has moved, legislation preventing this action.
"We have no confidence that Mexican trucks, trucking companies and drivers are held to the same standards as their American counterparts, and we cannot afford to give them access to our roadways.
"The American peoples' concerns regarding safety, security and economic risks involved with opening our roads to Mexico-domiciled trucks must be satisfied. The Administration cannot be allowed to force this misguided program upon us. Our district, from manufacturers to families driving their kids to school, relies on a safe and sound trucking industry."
