Rep. Young Votes For Advanced Veterans' Funding

Press Release

Date: June 23, 2009
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Veterans

Alaskan Congressman Don Young voted in favor of H.R. 1016, a bill he is a cosponsor of, which allows Congress to provide for advance appropriations for the Veterans Administration (VA). Veterans Administration budgets have been late 19 out of the last 22 years.

"As a veteran myself, I have consistently been a supporter of their issues, and consistently supported getting their budget done on time," said Rep. Young. "Every year this Congress plays politics with the various Appropriations bills and extensions have to be passed on budgets until we can get the bills through. When that happens, our Veterans lose out on funding and have to worry about how the VA is going to operate the next year. They should never have to worry about if they are going to be taken care of. Last Congress I signed numerous letters to House leadership urging them not to hold the Military Construction and Veterans Administration bill hostage so that they could use it as a bargaining chip for other priorities. Politicking has a time and a place; the bill that provides funds to care for our veterans is not it. I have heard from numerous Alaskan Veterans groups about the importance of this bill to them, and I am proud to be a cosponsor and support them."
