Congressman Bilbray Praises Homeland Security Decision to Trust Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers

In response to today's decision by Department of Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute to deny a petition for rulemaking related to detention standards for immigration detainees, Congressman Bilbray released the following statement:

"Today's decision by the Department of Homeland Security to trust Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in the treatment of detained illegal aliens is one of common sense. I am excited to see Homeland Security acting in this manner because we do not need one iota of more red tape on top of what is already a humane system of detention, and one that clearly has appropriate oversight. Additional regulations would only give these criminals a legal method for frivolous lawsuits and I don't support further clogging up our judicial system simply to set standards that are already being met."

"Further, if any of the detainees feel they are not being treated with dignity and respect, they always have the option of accepting their deportation orders and returning to their home country. They have this power currently. DHS should be commended for their wise decision."
