Location: Washington, DC

Continuing his pledge to provide quality and affordable health care for all Americans, Congressman Jared Polis met with President Barack Obama today and urged him to include an optional public health insurance system in upcoming health care reform. Polis and his colleagues in the Congressional Progressive Caucus visited the White House to discuss the Caucus' priorities for health care and spending initiatives.

"Today members of the Progressive Caucus and I met with President Obama to discuss the immediate need for comprehensive health care reform in this country," said Polis. "Health care premiums are rising up to six times faster than wages, furthering the economic woes of businesses and working families. Our health care system is broken, and the only feasible solution is an optional public health insurance system that will guarantee quality, affordable health care for all Americans. As he reiterated during our meeting today, President Obama has made comprehensive health care reform one of his top priorities. This Congress has an historic opportunity to make broad, long-lasting changes to our health care system, and I am glad we have such a strong ally in the White House. I look forward to working with the President to solve this crisis."

The Congressional Progressive Caucus was established in the U.S. House of Representatives in the early 1990s to reflect the diversity and strength of the American people. Their main goals include fighting for economic justice and security for all; protecting and preserving our civil rights and civil liberties; promoting global peace and security; and pursuing environmental protection and energy independence.
