Dodd Statement on the Nomination of Dr. Regina Benjamin to be Surgeon General

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a senior member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) and Chairman Edward Kennedy's chief deputy for health care reform, released the following statement after the President announced Dr. Regina Benjamin of Alabama as his nominee for Surgeon General.

"I applaud the President's nomination of Dr. Regina Benjamin to be Surgeon General," said Dodd. "As a doctor in a rural clinic, Dr. Benjamin has seen first hand the dire need to reform our nation's health care system. And with that understanding, I am confident she will play an important role as Congress - working with President Obama - moves forward with legislation to ensure that every American will have access to affordable, quality health care. I look forward to meeting Dr. Benjamin and hearing from her during her nomination hearings in the HELP Committee."
