Today, Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) commended President Obama's signing of an executive order lifting the ban on federal funding for promising embryonic stem cell research. This action is a critical step to boost ground-breaking stem cell research and restore scientific integrity across the government.
"The order President Obama signed today reverses President Bush's 2001 executive order that banned embryonic stem cell research, which had no basis in science and was not required by any law," said Rothman. "And a majority of scientists believe that embryonic stem cell research holds the most promise for those seeking cures to devastating and debilitating diseases such as Parkinson's, juvenile diabetes, and cancers. Equally as important, this research can be conducted within strict ethical guidelines. A majority of Americans agree."
