Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 by a vote of 219 to 212 (Roll Call No. 477). Voting in favor of the legislation, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA-03) issued the following statement:
"For the last eight years we had an administration that refused to take action on climate change. Today, Congress and President Obama accepted the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change exists and have decided to do something about it.
"The American Clean Energy and Security Act will ensure our carbon emissions are reduced over 80% by 2050 compared to 2005 levels, a benchmark which the scientific community agrees will be necessary to curb climate change. This legislation will also ensure that the United States will make an effective transition to a clean energy economy and achieve energy independence. By investing billions in clean energy technology, this bill will create new jobs and ensure that the United States will be the world's leader in the clean energy industry, while guaranteeing that American consumers are protected from energy price increases."
