Alexander Says Congress Is Wrong to Ignore Nuclear Power, "the Cheap Energy Solution to Global Warming"

Predicts New Energy Taxes and Mandates "Will Send Jobs Overseas Looking for Cheap Energy; More Cars and Trucks and Parts Will Be Built in Mexico and Japan, Fewer in Tennessee"

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said today that the congressional debate on global warming is a choice between high-priced and low-priced clean energy strategies. He told the Nashville Women's Political Caucus that the U.S. House of Representatives made a mistake last Friday when "it chose the high-price route and enacted new energy taxes and mandates.

"The House-passed ‘economy-wide cap-and-trade bill' is a job-killing, $100 billion-a-year national energy tax which would add a new utility bill to every family budget," said Alexander, a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. "And the mandates for renewable energy only will add more cost and unreliability to our electric rates.

"High-priced energy sends jobs overseas looking for cheap energy," Alexander continued. "It will mean more cars and trucks and parts made in Japan and Mexico and fewer in Tennessee."

Instead, the senator said Congress should enact a "cheap-energy strategy based on nuclear power, electric cars, offshore exploration, and doubling energy research and development. This is better for strained family budgets and a sick economy with 10 percent unemployment. It is also the fastest way to increase American energy independence, clean the air and reduce global warming."

Cheap energy not only helps create jobs, he said: "it will reduce global warming faster than taxes and mandates."
