Linder Statement On SCHIP Expansion Vote

Statement

Today, Representative John Linder addressed the U.S. House of Representatives in defense of taxpayers and low-income children. He released this statement following the vote:

"SCHIP is supposed to protect the most vulnerable children in our nation; not be a free hand-out to illegal immigrants and middle class Americans who can afford to pay their own way. Not only does this bill abandon low-income kids in favor of scoring political points, it expands SCHIP and Medicaid in an unsustainable manner."

"This is an irresponsible bill, wide open to fraud and abuse. People need only to provide their name and Social Security Number to be eligible; there are zero provisions in the Democrats' bill that require States to collect any documentation verifying identity or immigration status. This is just wrong."

"We should keep our promise to our nation's children and reauthorize SCHIP in its original form."
