Garrett Statement on the National Energy Tax

Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) issued the following statement on the national energy tax:

"I have and will continue to support an energy policy that will move America away from foreign sources of energy, and promote conservation, alternative fuels and deep-sea exploration. The legislation offered by the Democrats will not accomplish any of these objectives. This national energy tax is certain to raise electricity prices, increase gasoline prices and ship American jobs overseas.

Additionally, the national energy tax could reverse our chances for economic recovery as we are trying to climb out of this recession. Americans are already suffering from massive job losses, and this bill will only serve to hurt our economy further by killing jobs and levying unreasonable taxes on families. New Jerseyans are already afflicted with an above-average cost of living, causing thousands residents to flee the state last year alone. This legislation will only further exacerbate the situation.

"Today's vote on the national energy tax will have consequences for every American. It is a bad deal for America, and regardless of party affiliation, Republican or Democrat, no one should vote for this bill."
