Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Veterans

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, MI-08, said today that a new law providing benefits for post 9/11 U.S. military veterans comes at a crucial time with Michigan's unemployment leading the nation and the economy struggling to recover.

"Education is always important, but at no time has it been more crucial than in today's economic climate," Rogers said. "These men and women, who chose to defend our nation in some very dangerous places, have earned our respect and our gratitude for their sacrifices. The new Post 9/11 GI Bill is one way for a grateful nation to express its appreciation.

"Michigan's more than 12 percent unemployment rate sets the stage for returning veterans and their families to new additional training and education so they can prepare for the careers of the future."

Rogers, a co-sponsor of legislation that was the foundation for the new law, was joined by U.S. Department of Veterans Administration Chief Educational Liaison Marie George, several veterans, and veterans organizations at news conferences today in Howell and Lansing to talk about the specifics of the new Post 9/11 GI Bill which takes effect August 1.

The measure applies only to post 9/11 veterans and covers:

· Tuition and fees not to exceed the maximum in-state tuition and fees at a public institution of higher learning

A monthly housing allowance

An annual books and supplies stipend of $1,000

A one-time rural benefit payment

Rogers said applications are not being taken for the August 1 launch of the new benefits, but he urged veterans to begin preparation by contacting the VA, local colleges and universities, the VFW or American Legion, or his office for assistance.

"With classes beginning in the fall, and other opportunities available for job training, veterans need to get in on the program early," Rogers said. "This is an important tool for building a better future for themselves and their families."
