Congressional Rural Caucus Educates Members On Economic Development In Rural Communities

Today, the Congressional Rural Caucus held a briefing to educate its members and staff about the unique challenges rural communities face in attracting venture capital and stimulating economic development. Representatives from the venture capital industry, the National Association of Development Organizations, the National Association of Counties, and the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire presented to the Caucus on how the federal government can assist rural communities in attracting both capital and new economic opportunities.

"During today's tough times, it's more important than ever for rural communities to have the resources they need to attract capital and strengthen their economies," said Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Travis Childers (D-MS). "Following today's briefing, members and staff will be able to bring their knowledge back to their districts to help local county leadership and development organizations take advantage of federal resource and effectively promote economic development in rural areas. Additionally, members will now have a better understanding of what they can do in Washington to help break down barriers that currently hinder economic growth in rural areas."

"Nebraska and other rural states have seen a ‘brain drain' in recent years. As the depletion occurs, we lose our most vital economic asset - the younger generation - to more populated areas. We want to reverse this trend by helping rural communities realize their potential," Smith said.
