Gov. Perry Addresses Hometown Heroes in Denison, TX

Welcomes Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger back to Texas

It is a pleasure to be here in Denison, Texas, on behalf of more than 24 million Texans, welcoming home a favorite son, and celebrating our veterans who have fought to keep our nation free.

This time last year, I had the privilege of making my second visit to the beaches of Normandy on the anniversary of the D-Day landings. As I stood on that hallowed ground with my father, with our backs to the English Channel that he crossed many times in his B-17, I was humbled to consider the sacrifice that place had seen.

From the vertical cliffs of Point du Hoc that could not deter Earl Rudder and his boys, to the rows of white markers in the American Cemetery, I was reminded of the unbelievable sacrifice that our troops have made in the pursuit of freedom.

Throughout our nation's history, each generation has accepted the torch of freedom from those who preceded them…and served with valor.

The legacy of our fighting men and women are millions of people around the world who have breathed the rare air of freedom after living under the heel of an oppressor.

It is a legacy built through humble service, bravery and commitment to the highest ideals. Our military is a breeding ground for heroes, including one Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger.

Sully, your cool-headed actions on that cold January day, as you steered Cactus 1549 to a safe landing in the Hudson, reminded people that bravery, training and commitment will still carry the day.

You showed people how to do things Texas-style and inspired a nation with your bravery.

Today, I salute you, I honor our veterans and I thank God that he has blessed our state with such brave citizens. In return, may God bless you all and, through you, may He continue to bless the great state of Texas.
