Capito Statement on Loss of W.Va. Chrysler Dealerships

Statement

Date: May 15, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., released the following statement today regarding recent announcements about the closing of West Virginia car dealerships as part of Chrysler's re-organization efforts:

"These are West Virginia jobs on the line," said Capito. "Our dealers and their employees are on the ground in our communities. They provide good jobs, much-needed service to West Virginia car-owners, and engage in important community service. With this move towards closing nearly twenty West Virginia Chrysler dealerships, they're the ones paying the price for the missteps and mistakes of others."

"Closing dealerships in rural communities may mean the loss of one of their largest and most important locally-based businesses. And it means that West Virginians may have to travel longer distances to purchase and service their cars."

"My additional concern is about how this process has unfolded and how dealers have been selected for closure. Why these specific dealers? Why this number of dealers? What impact will these closures have on the market-share of American car-manufacturers? We need answers to these sorts of questions."

Capito will join other members of the delegation in penning a letter to members of the President's Auto Taskforce.
