Congressman Dave Reichert (WA-08) today applauded President Barack Obama's proposal for a new national fuel efficiency standard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions:
"President Obama's consensus-based plan to reduce auto emissions is vital to protecting our environment, conserving natural resources, and ultimately reducing our dependence on foreign oil. The proposal will also encourage innovation and the development of new energy technologies that can help us achieve energy independence and preserve the planet for future generations. I commend President Obama for his initiative and pledge to work with him to gain support for this proposal."
The Administration's proposal would raise corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. The plan received not only the support of environmental advocates but also commitments from major automakers like Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
