Oregon's Senator Jeff Merkley's commitment to clean energy took him to the Oregon Institute of Technology today where he toured the school and learned about their pioneering use of geothermal energy.

"Building a clean energy economy is essential to our national security and our environment," Merkley said. "We have both the need and the opportunity to transition from fossil fuels to renewable resources. Oregon is lucky to have a national leader in building the clean energy economy right here in Klamath Falls."

Oregon Institute of Technology is a leader in the sustainability movement. According to the school, it has used geothermal energy for heating since 1964 and will be climate neutral by 2017. It will achieve climate neutrality through reducing energy consumption, improving building design, utilizing solar power, and constructing a low-temperature geothermal power plant.
