WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) is privileged to announce that senior Brock Hanson of Starkville High School is the 2009 winner of the Third District Congressional Art Competition. Brock's entry entitled "Facing Reality" will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year beginning in June.

"Each student's entry expressed the qualities of an accomplished artist," said Congressman Gregg Harper. "I am impressed by the artistic talent in the youth throughout the Third Congressional District."

In addition to having his art displayed in the U.S. Capitol, Brock will receive three roundtrip tickets to Washington, DC compliments of Southwest Airlines to attend a Capitol Hill reception and is eligible to receive a $1,500 per year scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga.

Three accomplished Mississippi artists and Third Congressional District residents judged the competition: Lea Barton of Flora, George Ann McCullough of Madison and David Lambert of Jackson. Each artist is an experienced art competition jurist and has received many accolades for their own work.

"I am grateful that Lea, George Ann and David agreed to judge my first Congressional Art competition," said Congressman Gregg Harper. "With their involvement, each winner can be confident their work meets a high standard."

In recognition of the over 100 entries from 15 schools, Congressman Harper will host a reception for the overall winner, division winners, participants, teachers and families on Friday, May 8, at 2:00 p.m. at the Brandon Public Library (1475 W. Government Street, Brandon, Mississippi 39042).
