Arkansas Delegation Announces $11.2 Million To Help Reduce Homelessness

U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representatives Marion Berry (AR-01), Vic Snyder (AR-02) and Mike Ross (AR-04) today announced $11.2 million to assist Arkansas's families hit by the economic crisis. These federal funds are among the state's first allocations from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Recipients of the 2009 Recovery Act Homeless Prevention Grant Program funding are:

City of Little Rock $682,197
State of Arkansas $10,530,746

"Every Arkansas family deserves to live in a safe, secure home," said Lincoln. "These funds will provide much-needed assistance to Arkansans hit by the economic crisis, offering security to these families and ultimately strengthening the communities in which they live."

"This assistance is a prime example of how the recovery package will serve as a lifeboat to keep families off the streets and in stable homes, and help communities recover from these tough economic times. I urge the state to allocate these dollars as efficiently and effectively as possible," said Pryor.

"In these economically uncertain times, so many families are one illness or paycheck away from losing their home," said Berry. "This funding from the recently enacted Recovery Act will help families who are unable to afford or obtain housing due to unforeseen circumstances find a place to live and get back on their feet."

"I am pleased to see Arkansas and the City of Little Rock receive funding to assist people impacted by the downturn in our economy," said Snyder. "Homelessness is a problem throughout our nation, and we should try as best we can to help get these people back on their feet."

"No working family should be put out on the streets because of a deteriorating economy caused in large part by Wall Street executives who drove good companies into the ground," said Ross. "Part of the President's economic recovery and job creation plan was to help ensure that working families get back on their feet and keep their homes. These funds will help Arkansas ensure a dignified quality of life for all who call our state home."

The Homelessness Prevention Grant Program provides financial and other assistance to help prevent families from becoming homeless. The program also helps those who are homeless quickly find housing. The funds provide for a variety of assistance including short-term or medium-term rental assistance and housing relocation and stabilization services such as mediation, security or utility deposits, utility payments, moving cost assistance and case management.
