McIntyre Leads Effort to Support Infrastructure for Rural Communities in the Stimulus Package

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre has been instrumental in championing funding for infrastructure for small towns and rural communities across America. McIntyre was joined by 20 of his colleagues in signing a letter to the House leadership and has personally discussed the need for helping rural areas with the Obama Administration. He also recently conducted an Economic Roundtable on Capitol Hill which focuses on needs in rural communities. Furthermore, he has urged Congressional leadership to provide full funding for the backlogs in the USDA Rural Development Water and Wastewater Program and the Community Facilities Program.

Congressman McIntyre stated, "These programs provide vital funding for rural communities to provide clean drinking water, build hospitals, and improve schools. We must provide enough resources in the upcoming stimulus package to wipe out the large backlogs in the programs at USDA. This funding will help stimulate jobs in rural economies while also providing communities with the basic infrastructure so desperately needed."

A proposed stimulus spending plan approved by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee included $1.5 billion in funding for the Water and Wastewater Program and $200 million in funding for the Community Facilities Program. The plan must now be approved by the full House of
