I recently received my committee and subcommittee assignments for the 111th Congress. As in years past, I requested positions that would ensure the diverse needs of the 2nd District were protected. Accordingly, I have retained my seat on both the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. It is critical our region have a voice on the transportation and military-related policies that will be crafted and debated during this session of Congress.
As the only member from South Jersey serving on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I will continue to work to improve the formula to bring more federal highway and transit dollars back to the state. As in years past, I will team up with my colleagues on the committee and from New Jersey to secure federal dollars for our ongoing transportation needs. Furthermore, because our infrastructure needs extend far beyond our highways and roadways, my positions on the Subcommittee on Aviation and the Subcommittee on Water Resources & the Environment are critical in the ongoing battle for beach replenishment funding and airport infrastructure projects, particularly at the Atlantic City International Airport.
Additionally, my assignment as the top Republican on the Subcommittee on the Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation will have a direct and immediate impact on the 2nd District. With thousands of personnel and their families living in South Jersey, I was pleased to again be tapped to oversee this subcommittee which has jurisdiction over policies and issues pertaining to the Coast Guard, maritime transportation safety and security policies. This appointment is especially important given the upcoming Coast Guard Authorization bill and ongoing modernization efforts that require constant attention.
Similarly vital to our region's security and safety, I am also pleased to again serve on the House Armed Services Committee. In previous Congresses, I have worked to protect and promote local military installations and homeland defense units. In the past two years, more than $18 million has been directed to the 177th Fighter Wing in Egg Harbor Township for new construction of state-of-the-art facilities, including their Alert Complex. I will continue to use my positions on the Subcommittee on Air & Land Forces and the Subcommittee on Readiness to ensure the men and women of the 177th Air National Guard and troops serving overseas have the necessary resources to complete their mission. I will also use my seat on the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Unconventional Threats & Capabilities to maintain and expand South Jersey's vital role in homeland security.
I am pleased with my assignments and will work diligently with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle on issues that come before both committees. Additionally, I will continue to monitor legislation in other committees and measure their impact on South Jersey residents. I welcome the opinions of South Jersey residents on pending legislation before my committees and the House and look forward to a productive Congress that, hopefully, will deliver more results than rhetoric for our working families and small businesses.
