Brown Responds to DHL Decision to Close Wilmington Operations

Brown Calls White House to Ensure Coordinated Federal Response in Wilmington

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) issued the following statement in response to DHL's decision to close its remaining operation in Wilmington.

"My thoughts continue to be with Wilmington airpark workers and their families. DHL's closure represents an economic disaster and we need to address the situation in Wilmington with the same attention we give to natural disasters. That means a coordinated and robust federal response that invests in workers and the long-term economic future of the region," said Brown.

Brown called the White House today to enlist the help of the Obama Administration in responding to the loss of DHL jobs. Brown requested the administration appoint a senior official to coordinate the federal response to the situation.

Since DHL's decision to shut down its Wilmington hub last May, Brown has been working closely with local and state officials. Brown will continue to work alongside Governor Ted Strickland, Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher, and Mayor David Raizk in an effort to resolve ownership of the Wilmington air park.

Earlier this year, Brown introduced new legislation that would facilitate federal assistance to communities like Wilmington undergoing extreme economic distress. More information about Brown's bill and his letter to the president in support of the legislation can be found here.

In December, Brown hosted a roundtable with Mayor Raizk to meet with displaced workers and outline next steps for the Wilmington community.
