More Good News out of Duke Medical Center

Posted by: Sen. Richard Burr

North Carolina is fortunate to have some of the best places for higher education in the country, and along with that, some of the best minds in cutting edge research. So, I was very excited to hear of news this week of a medical study that could mark the end of life-threatening peanut allergies. Doctors and scientists at Duke University Medical Center and Arkansas Children's Hospital spearheaded medical research that may have found a cure for an allergy to peanuts and tree nuts. The study has found that by distributing a medically supervised daily dose of peanuts to children with peanut allergies, it actually will increase their tolerance to the food.

Millions of Americans are living with food allergies, and allergies to peanuts are considered one of the most dangerous with life-threatening reactions possible from just trace amounts. The hard work these researchers have done will improve the quality of life for thousands, as well as ease the minds of parents whose children have peanut allergies. Although more study is needed before the treatment can be used outside of a research setting, all of North Carolina can be proud of this discovery and the research conducted at Duke.
