Governor Lynch, Federal Officials Sign Agreement for Mittersill Land Exchange

Allows the Reopening of Mittersill Ski Area at Cannon Mountain

Culminating a 15-year effort, Gov. John Lynch and federal officials today signed an agreement approving a land exchange that will allow the state to reopen the Mittersill Ski Area expand the Cannon Mountain Ski Area.

The state agreed to exchange a portion of Sentinel Mountain State Forest in Piermont for a 100-acre portion of the White Mountain National Forest known as "Old Mittersill Ski Area," which is adjacent to the Cannon Mountain Ski Area.

"This is truly an important day for the State of New Hampshire, and for the future of Cannon Mountain. This will allow the state to expand the ski area at Cannon Mountain, and offer even greater skiing options for our citizens and visitors. I am pleased we were able to work together to finally make this land exchange a reality," Gov. Lynch said.

The state and federal government have agreed to exchange parcels of land of equal value. Because the value of Sentinel Mountain as appraised higher than Mittersill, the federal government paid the State of New Hampshire $40,000 in addition to the land swap.

The agreement will allow Cannon Mountain Ski Area to expand to the Mittersill side of the mountain. It will also allow the federal government to control one of the last remaining portions of the Appalachian Trail that it does not currently administer in New Hampshire.

The state has been working with the U.S. Forest Service since 1989 to reopen Mittersill.
