Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today issued the following statement in regard to this week marking the sixth anniversary of the Cuban regime's notorious 2003 "Black Spring" crackdown in which the government jailed 75 activists and independent journalists.

"On this, the sixth anniversary of the 2003 ‘Black Spring' crackdown, we are reminded of the brutality of the Cuban regime. Fifty four of the 75 activists remain imprisoned for peacefully demanding that the regime respects the human rights enjoyed by all Americans and the citizens of every nation in the hemisphere - except Cuba. These prisoners of conscience should be released immediately and allowed to live in Cuba without oppression or harassment."
