Rep. Doris Matsui Statement on President Obama's First Major Education Speech

Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA - 05) issued the following statement in support of President Barack Obama's first major speech on education this morning:

"President Obama showed great leadership today by laying out a bold vision for America's educational system, and improving education at all levels. Our schools are struggling during this time of economic challenge. Parents have less time with their kids as they try to make ends meet. Teachers are struggling to provide the resources they need for their classrooms. And students are suffering as a result.

"Sacramento has a wealth of committed teachers and great schools, but they cannot do it alone. President Obama's proposal demonstrates that he takes education seriously, and I share his commitment to making education a national priority. Our investment in public education will allow us to increase access to higher education, fuel our local economy with high-skilled workers, and offer each student the opportunity to reach their potential.

"I look forward to working with President Obama, Education Secretary Duncan, and my colleagues in Congress to make sure our shared goal of providing a world-class education for every American becomes a reality."
