U.S. Senator Mike Johanns made the following statement following President Obama's decision to sign an executive order reversing restrictions on federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research:
"I am deeply disappointed in the action taken by this administration today. I believe in the sanctity of life at all stages, and I strongly disagree with the President's decision to allow the creation and destruction of life for scientific experiments.
"There have been encouraging breakthroughs in adult stem cell research, and I am hopeful there will be future advances based on this method of research. These adult stem cells can often be used for the same kinds of research as embryonic stem cells with great success without using or harming embryos.
"However, the use of embryonic stem cells for these same types of research often creates life only to destroy it. This is why I strongly oppose the use of embryonic stem cells beyond the stem cell lines authorized by President Bush's Executive Order and strongly disagree with the action taken today by President Obama."
