Baldwin Warns of Stimulus Scams

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin today warned Wisconsinites to beware of con artists trying to defraud people using economic stimulus funds as bait.

"I'm very concerned that people may be duped by scams that are popping up all over the Internet. It's more important than ever to guard your personal information from con artists who see the stimulus plan as another opportunity to steal your money, your identity, or both," said Congresswoman Baldwin.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has highlighted two of the most prevalent current scams: (1) websites advertising that they can help people get money from the stimulus funds and (2) emails that ask for bank account information so stimulus funds can be deposited directly into your account.

Some of the websites use deceptive names or images of President Obama to look official. Some sites offer a list of government grants and say you can apply for them by paying a fee upfront.

Baldwin reminds people that the government does not charge people to apply for federal grants, nor does it ask for your bank account information by email or telephone. If you have questions or concerns about offers regarding stimulus funds, please call Congresswoman Baldwin's offices in Madison (608-258-9800) or Beloit (608-362-2800).
