Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today issued the following statement on President Obama's signing of an executive order that lifts the ban imposed by the Bush Administration on federal stem cell research. Harkin has introduced the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, legislation to lift the restrictions in the last three Congresses.
"Today is an historic day for all Americans - for patients suffering from disease, their families and loved ones, and for those of us who have fought for more than 8 years to free up our best scientists to pursue stem cell research to its fullest. I hope Congress will follow today's action soon by passing my bipartisan bill to protect this research under Federal law and ensure that future administrations cannot reverse this executive order.
"But today's executive order does more than promote stem cell research. It also signals a new approach to scientific research in this country - one that is dictated not by political agenda, but by the hope for a cure."
