Matheson Says Census Bureau Management Shouldn't Be Politicized
Congressman Jim Matheson said today he supports the administration's decision to have the Department of Commerce oversee the 2010 census. That reverses an earlier announcement that the population count would be under White House management.
"I applaud this decision. Utah's unfortunate experience with the census in 2000which robbed us of an additional seat in Congressshows that politics should be kept to a minimum when it comes to the Constitutionally-required population count," said Matheson.
Commerce Secretary Nominee Gary Locke met with members of the Senate Wednesday to reassure them that the 2010 census will be managed by the Commerce Department, not by the White House. That idea had been floated at the time Republican Senator Judd Gregg was nominated to be Commerce Secretary amid concerns over how the census would be conducted
