Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Statement

Date: Jan. 9, 2009

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

WHEREAS, as we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we remember the dream of a great man—an American hero—and his message of social change through nonviolence.

WHEREAS, Dr. King created a powerful and enduring legacy for all Americans by calling upon our nation to ensure equal justice under law and uphold our founding ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all people. He believed that all people are made in God's image and created equal.

WHEREAS, working alongside individuals of all ages, races, and backgrounds, Dr. King encouraged Americans to come together to strengthen communities, alleviate poverty, and acknowledge dignity and respect for all human beings. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example—the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility, and service that so radiantly defined his character and empowered his leadership.

WHEREAS, he dedicated his life to empowering people, no matter their circumstances, and challenged them to lift up their neighbors and communities. He broke down barriers within our society by encouraging Americans to look past their differences and refused to rest until our nation fulfilled its pledge of liberty and justice for all.

WHEREAS, in communities throughout the state, Alaskans will join the tens of thousands of volunteers across the nation who will celebrate Dr. King's life and teachings by converting the holiday into a day of service, dedicated to meeting community needs.

WHEREAS, yet more work remains. As Dr. King proclaimed, "We will not be satisfied until 'justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.'"

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the state of Alaska, do hereby proclaim January 19, 2009 as:

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans remember a great man with appropriate activities and programs that honor the memory and legacy of Dr. King.
