U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D- IA) today spoke at a rally in support of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). EFCA will restore workers' freedom to bargain for better working conditions and benefits. Harkin was joined by Rep. George Miller (D-CA), workers, and union leaders as they delivered more than 1 million cards and petitions urging passage of the bill. Harkin is an original cosponsor of the legislation.
"Let's face facts. It's better to bargain collectively than to beg individually," said Harkin. "As the percentage of organized workers grows, everyone starts doing better. Companies start paying attention, and they start paying better wages even to non-union workers in order to stay competitive. It's no coincidence that states with more union members and better organizing laws have higher average wages for everyone. Now is the time to put the choice to join a union back in the hands of workers - not bosses."
