Rep. Engel: FDA Takes Vital First Medical Step Using Embryonic Stem Cells

Congressman Eliot Engel released the following statement regarding the Food and Drug Administration's approval for the first human trial using embryonic stem cells as a medical treatment to re-grow nerve tissue in patients with damaged spinal cords.

"This is a great day for anyone that has suffered with such ailments as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, ALS, cancer or other degenerative diseases. If scientists are able to find a cure for any of these, then millions of families will have their lives changed for the better. It shows that our country will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to keep our citizens healthy.

"As a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Health, I was an original co-sponsor of legislation to permit federal funding for embryonic stem cell research - legislation that was vetoed by President Bush. I look forward to working with the expanded Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and with President Obama, to pass legislation to open new sources of funding and provide hope to millions of Americans and their families affected by these diseases or injuries.

"One day we may look back on this as the beginning of a new era in medical research. Like the overwhelming majority of Americans, I am determined to have stem cell research become more readily available to help our fellow citizens. Stem cell research will extend life, and honor life."
