Hoyer: The Democratic 110th Congress Continues to Make Education a Priority

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:

"A front page story in the New York Times this past week tells the story of Diana and Ronnie Jacobs of Salem, IN. With Ronnie Jacobs recently laid off and as their finances continue to weaken, the Jacobs family is struggling with how to pay college tuition for their 21-year-old twin sons.

"Another story in Sunday's Washington Post tells the equally troubling story of Danielle Price, a high school senior with promising college prospects but no way to pay for the education.

"The Jacobs and Price families are not alone. In this time of great economic crisis, millions of American families are struggling to support their most basic needs and worry that access to higher education for their children is in jeopardy.

"The Democratic 110th Congress has worked to address the concerns of millions of American families, as confirmed with the passage of the Higher Education Act and Extending the Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act of 2008. This recently enacted legislation encourages colleges to rein in price increases, restores integrity and accountability to the student loan program, simplifies the federal student aid application process, expands college access and support for low-income and minority students, and ensures equal opportunities for students with disabilities.

"In this time of economic turmoil, Democrats in Congress will continue to work for families like the Jacobs and Prices, ensuring that they can provide their children with an affordable and accessible college education."
