We Must Let Prohibitions Expire

Signs onto Letter for American Energy Freedom Day

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) signed onto a letter encouraging majority leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives to allow American energy independence by letting prohibitions on oil and gas leases on portions of the Outer Continental Shelf and on oil shale leasing on federal lands to expire on October 1, 2008.

"Large amounts of American energy resources will become available if my colleagues let the prohibitions expire," Boozman said. "We need to take advantage of our natural resources to decrease the cost Americans are paying at the pump."

Boozman says he will vote ‘no' on any legislation that extends the prohibitions on leasing on the Outer Continental Shelf, and also signed a letter asking President Bush to veto any spending bills that would continue the moratoria that expires on October1, 2008.

"My constituents in the Third District of Arkansas can no longer afford for Congress to talk about energy policy. We need action. The access to the resources in the Outer Continental Shelf will drive prices down and provide relief to all Americans as we continue to invest in the development of renewable and alternative energies for the future" Boozman said.

Minerals Management Service and the Bureau of Land Management estimate 18 billion barrels of recoverable crude oil on the off-limit areas of the Outer Continental Shelf and billions to trillions of barrels of oil in American oil shale.

Boozman joins hundreds of members of Congress urging for American Energy Freedom Day, the day the prohibitions on these leases expire.
