Letting Prohibitions Expire Right Step to American Energy Independence

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today applauded the decision of his colleagues to allow American energy independence by letting prohibitions on oil and gas leases on portions of the Outer Continental Shelf and on oil shale leasing on federal lands to expire.

"Congress has finally made a good decision on this country's energy policy that will provide some relief to Arkansans continuing to struggle with the high cost of gasoline," Boozman said. "It is in our best interest to allow us access to our natural resources to develop American-made energy and this puts us on the path to accomplish that goal. We must also continue to invest in the development of renewable and alternative energies for the future."

Boozman, along with other members of Congress sent a letter earlier this month to Speaker Nancy Pelosi on behalf of the millions of Americans feeling pain at the gas pump and seeking to increase production of American energy.

Tuesday, House Majority members told reporters they will drop their effort to extend the current prohibitions on energy leasing on most of the Outer Continental Shelf and on oil shale leasing on federal lands.

Boozman will celebrate American Energy Freedom Day October 1, 2008 the day the prohibitions on the leases expire.
