Cover the Uninsured Week gives us all an opportunity to raise awareness of one of the most challenging problems facing New Mexico and our country. Nearly 400,000 New Mexicans lack health coverage, and thousands more struggle to pay skyrocketing premiums and unfair charges levied by insurance companies.
Families should not have to choose between food and medicine, and parents should not have to hope that each day they will not get sick, so they can continue to provide for their children. Affordable and accessible health care should be a right for all New Mexicans. We need to stand up for the uninsured and fight for affordable and accessible health coverage for all.
I have experience fighting for the uninsured and those struggling with their insurance companies. At the Public Regulation Commission, I initiated an investigation into the health insurance industry's denial practices. And with my fellow commissioners, I developed legislation that expands coverage and closes loopholes the insurance industry had been using to unfairly refuse payment on medical claims.
In Congress, health care will be one of my top priorities. I will continue to stand up for uninsured New Mexicans and fight for universal health coverage that is affordable and accessible for everyone.
