Statement of Congressman Brad Sherman on The State of The Union

Date: Jan. 20, 2004
Location: Washington, DC

Washington, D.C. - "The most important and frightening part of this speech is the proposal to divert Social Security Trust funds into a new privatized Social Security program. Such privatization schemes endanger benefits to today's retirees.

"The President forgot to mention the Moon, Mars, and the federal deficit - all of which are sky-high."

"In 2002, the President identified a three country "Axis of Evil", two of which really have weapons of mass destruction - not just nefarious plans. Tonight the President mentioned Iran and North Korea only once, in a single sentence. The real threats to America are virtually ignored by the speech and by the Administration.

"The President boasts that exports have increased. He fails to mention that imports have increased far more. He boasts about increases in jobs - 1000 new jobs nationwide last month. Each month over 150,000 more people of working age enter the workforce."
