Issue Position: Social Security

Issue Position

I believe we need responsible reform measures that would allow younger workers to take ownership of their Social Security retirement benefits through voluntary personal accounts, while at the same time protecting your benefits and those of other retirees.

Clearly, we are facing a serious challenge, and we need to find a viable solution. In just 13 short years, the government will have to come up with the cash needed to honor the Treasury bills credited to the Social Security trust funds so that promised benefits can be paid. Unless the government raises taxes, cuts spending or increases the debt in order to honor its commitments, the end result is all too predictable - a bankrupt Social Security system.

I believe that we can and must do better for you and your children and grandchildren. We need to find a comprehensive solution, one that protects your benefits and the benefits of other retirees, while allowing our future generations to achieve greater financial stability by investing in their futures. As we move forward, we need to be mindful that this is not just about fixing the flaws in a government program; it's about every American's retirement security. You worked hard and sacrificed for your money, and I believe that you - not Washington - should own it and control it. I am committed to that goal, and I am hopeful that my Republican colleagues and friends from across the aisle will come together in true bipartisan fashion to keep that promise.
