Issue Position: A Free and Strong Economy

Doug Cloud understands the economy and how it got into this mess we hear about every day. He is proposing real solutions: ending deficit spending, rolling back taxes, reducing the size of the budget, preventing bank bail-outs and inflationary monetary policies. Doug knows these approaches are the only way to getting our country back on its feet. The current Congress is the most unpopular in history because it has done the exact opposite, and Doug's opponent has helped to lead the way down this dangerous path.

The Carter years were so devastating to America. Yet the incumbent takes us back to that era with every vote he makes, every bill he sponsors. Norm Dicks has spent 30 years advocating higher taxes and spending, and allowed special interests to use the federal bureaucracy to their short-term advantage. The result is looming inflation, exploding energy costs, reckless government spending and bubble-creating government regulation. Mr. Dicks has helped create our financial crisis, yet he is proposing more of the same.

The grip of bigger government is strangling our economy. It's sometimes said that congressman Dicks 'brings home the bacon' by bringing back the dollars you spend in Federal taxes, although the Government Accounting Office says most of it stays in government. The effects of the incumbent's generosity with your money will linger long into the future unless we change the habits of D.C. now by preventing him from doing any more damage.

With change a popular word this election season, it has special meaning for Washington State. Looking to government for a solution to every problem not only empties our pockets and curbs our freedom, but it stifles our creativity as well. On the other hand, the policies which Doug Cloud supports would empower our communities and keep our money safe in our pockets, not in tax-payer bail-outs to banks and corporations.

Doug sees in our traditions of Liberty the potential to unleash American ingenuity on all the problems we face. He will work to take control of our communities back from D.C. and return it to the people of Washington State, where it belongs.

Doug will bring real change to D.C. and fight for the prosperity of his constituents, not the needs of special interests. He is proposing principled, inventive solutions to the problems created by the outdated policies of his opponent.

Our district is long overdue for new congressional leadership and the new ideas it would bring. However, Doug's opponent suggests in his literature that the challenges we face are too complex for us and that we must depend on him and the Federal Government for help. Actually, the policies of Norm Dicks' Federal government are largely responsible for the problems arising today. The incumbent is one of 12 congressmen on the Congressional Appropriations Committee which controls government purse strings. Every tax dollar of yours wasted, most of it unconstitutionally, is spent with his approval.

Doug Cloud wants those tax dollars to remain in your pocket - spent, saved or donated at your discretion, not the Federal government's. Control over public projects of Western Washington should stay in Western Washington. Doug Cloud wants you to keep your change, and bring Washington the change we deserve.
